These embroidered ornaments were made by Dongxiang (pronounced “dong she-young“) in Northwest China. Illiterate and unemployed, the sale of their creations gives them much-needed income and a sense of accomplishment and self-esteem.
Each ornament measures approximately 3.5 x 3.5 inches.
Traditionally, Dongxiang women embroider shoe insoles and pillowcases.
These snowflake ornaments specifically were handmade and embroidered by Seguo. Seguo and her two daughters live with her sister. Seguo's husband was incarcerated and she is culturally isolated because she does not have a son. But she loves to embroider! It gives her a purpose and plan to support herself and her children. Show her any pattern and she will carefully make it with care and diligence. Her embroidery is a “punch and pull” style & gives a three dimensional design to her flowers.
